Late night show shenanigans with Frankie
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
What happens behind the scenes of “The Late Show with
Frankie and Kriya”? We asked Frankie to give us an inside look.
The DJ says a “whole bunch of crazy happens” on the show, and considering he once had to dress up like a woman for a week, we’d have to agree.
“We have all these challenges which have turned into a test to see which one of us can outdo the other. There have been a few suggestions which are just too dangerous to try, although I’m still going to get Kriya to try the taser ;).
“We talk hours of trash in between songs. Late at night we often come up with the most ridiculous theories. No I’m not going to share them with you.”
During one challenge, Frankie learned that is not easy being a woman. One of his most embarrassing moments as a DJ was when he had to dress up as the opposite sex.
“Dressing up as a woman for a whole week was one of the worst experiences ever. I had to wake up an hour earlier every morning, at four, to do make-up. How do you girls survive that?”
Frankie likes to get himself pumped up for the show by listening to inspirational music during his drive to work.
“I dig songs that inspire me and make me amped for a radio show. Recently there are two I love: Greg Holden’s Hold on Tight and The Cadillac Three’s Partly Like You,” he said.
When he’s not at the Jacaranda FM studios he’s working at the production office he runs with his partners, horse riding or taking drum and guitar lessons.
But there is no greater joy than being able to put a smile on his listeners’ faces.
“The power that the radio has to touch someone I don’t knows life. I hope to think I put a smile on someone’s face every day. The best perk is the incredible people we get to meet. Of course that includes famous musicians and celebrities, but we get to chat and meet all of our listeners and they are just wonderful. I’ve met some fascinating people from all walks of life and I’m reminded every time how privileged I am to be in this job. It’s like I get to connect with the South African soul every day.”
Three things you don’t know about Frankie
1. I’m an addict for online shopping specials, if it says 60% off, I’m buying.
2. I love biting my nails. Some people say it’s disgusting, I disagree.
3. I was a star gymnast in my youth. I know, you’d never say.
Tune in to the “The Late Show with Frankie and Kriya” from 22:00 to 01:00, Monday to Thursday.
