A day in the life of a Jacaranda FM DJ
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
What is a day in the life of a
Jacaranda FM DJ like, and, more importantly, what
happens behind the scenes?
There’s more to being a radio host than talking on-air and getting freebies.
Yes, radio DJs might not need to get dolled up to get behind the mic, but there is a lot of work that goes into bringing listeners the best radio content.
We got to know more about what it takes to be a Jacaranda FM DJ with fan favourite, Martin Bester.
Martin’s day usually starts with him feeding his cats (yes, he is a cat guy) and letting his chickens out (wait, what? chickens?!).
He then makes himself some coffee and spends some time on his phone reading emails and checking his social media accounts.
“Then I’m off to gym, meetings if there are any, then to the studio around 13h00 to prepare for the show,” he said.
On the way to work Martin says he’s listening to whatever Jacaranda is playing - duh!
So what happens when he gets to Jacaranda’s headquarters in Midrand?
“Behind the scenes before the show is all about preparation and making sure we have the best content, guests, and talking points possible that would appeal to our audience and entertain them. During the show we just have fun on and off air, sometimes we misbehave completely when the mics are off!”
With all that preparation, you’d think everything would go smoothly. But things don’t always go as planned.
“A friend of mine phoned the studio not realising he was on air and let’s just say the conversation did not start in a way that was suitable for family radio,” he confessed.
After the show, Martin is either off to rehearsals with his band Kinky Robot or attending gigs.
He says what he loves most about being a DJ is that it’s not really a job.
We’re sure the freebies help too!
“I’m sponsored by Mercedes-Benz Centurion; I would say that’s a perk. I also get to travel to cool places and interview really famous people for the show!”
