Cape Town-born right-handed batsman Temba Bavuma's maiden test century at Newlands has made him the hero needed for a shaky 2016 already, having made history as the first indigenous black South African to achieve the feat.
Jacaranda FM salutes a new national hero in 25-year-old Temba Bavuma - the first indigenous black South African to score a test century at the hallowed Newlands grounds in his native, Cape Town.
Signed to the Bizhub Lions as well, Bavuma is very much a Cape Town and Langa star as he is a shining beacon for Gauteng: "I was born here in Cape Town. This is where I learnt cricket - the passion, it grew from here. So having been able to achieve this kind of milestone at my favourite ground in the world, it makes it a bit more special."
Bavuma unpacks the significance of representing the national side: "It's not just me walking on the field, but it's a whole lot of kids. I looked today at the kids who were there over lunchtime and half those kids come from Langa and half those kids know my name. So whenever I go back to Langa now, I know I'm going to have those kids running around me. There's a greater significance about it.
