WATCH: let's sing along with 'Friend Day' theme songs
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
It’s Friend Day, and we’re here to help you celebrate the people in your life that are always there to cry with you, laugh with you, and grab a coffee or..ahem..adult beverage when you need it most.
Best friends, groups of friends, work friends, or long distance friends – we love them all!
Here are seven of our favourite friendship songs…maybe it’s time to dedicate on to your best friend over the radio?
The Rembrandts – I’ll Be There For You
No top friendship songs list would be complete without this classic. I mean, it was the theme tune to a show literally based entirely on a group of friends. What else is there to say? Turn it up loud and sing along unashamedly. This is one song with no room for shyness. Or dignity.
Red Hot Chili Peppers – My Friends
If you’re not the upbeat, corny type, the good old Chili Peppers are there for you. In friendship terms, they’re the ever reliable, low maintenance friend who’s got your back, but doesn’t need to send you hugs and kisses every day to prove it. You want a great song about friendship, but without sugary-sweet pop lyrics? Strictly no happy dancing required? This is the one for you.
Lean On Me – Bill Withers
When you’re not strong, I’ll be your friend, I’ll help you carry on’. The original, heartfelt version of this song is all you need to remember that friends are your man made support system….and that you are theirs. If this isn’t quite your vibe, the hit remake by Club Nouveau still gets the message across, but is a little bit more upbeat. We still love the sheer tenderness of the original though.
Jason Mraz – Song For A Friend
The master of mushy, feel-good acoustic tunes strikes again. This song reminds us that having a good friend who always believes in you and encourages you to be the best you can be is a true blessing.
Ben E. King - Stand By Me
So, we know. It sounds like a love song. Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. Think about the time your best friend called after their break up. See what we mean? The message definitely still holds true for good friends.
Bruno Mars - Count On Me
You can always rely on Bruno Mars to make an infuriatingly catchy song that you’ll be singing for the rest of the day. This cheery one is basically the premise of all good friendships. You can count on me, and I can count on you.
Randy Newman – You’ve Got A Friend In Me
The Toy Story anthem was always going to feature on this list. If Woody and Buzz aren’t the epitome of true friendship, we don’t know what is. Maybe Woody and Andy?
