An in-demand skill setting job seekers apart in South Africa
Updated | By Jacaranda FM/Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
South Africans should focus on getting one key skill that can secure their future employment: artificial intelligence (AI).

When artificial intelligence (AI) first became a topic of discussion, it sparked fear and uncertainty, particularly around job security.
While often painted in a negative light early on, AI has since emerged as one of the most in-demand skill sets among forward-thinking companies.
According to Pnet’s latest Job Market Trends report, the number of AI professionals securing employment has doubled from Q4:2019/Q1:2020 to Q4:2024/Q1:2025.
This showed a significant growth in the demand for AI professionals over Q1:2018 and Q1:2024, where Pnet noted a 183% jump.
"Companies across South Africa are ramping up their search for AI talent, with AI no longer a buzzword but one of the most attractive skill sets in the workplace."
Pnet also noted that over the past year, IT companies accounted for 62% of total AI hires, underscoring the sector’s dominant role in driving AI adoption.
While IT companies, particularly those focused on software and AI development, remain the leading employers of AI professionals, the education sector accounts for around 10% of AI-related hires.
Other industries showing growing interest in AI talent include finance, telecommunications, and consulting.
Pnet also noted that many AI professionals are dedicating time to their own innovative ideas and passion projects, highlighting a strong potential for growth in AI-driven startups.
The demand for AI talent is growing, evident in the numbers from talent acquisition experts. Employers' investment means something to job seekers desperately searching for employment.
What does this mean for job seekers?
"For job seekers, the message is clear: those who understand and can effectively apply AI tools will unlock a wealth of career opportunities,” said Pnet.
As digital innovation continues to transform industries, candidates who can align AI capabilities with business goals are quickly becoming the most sought-after talent.
So, there you have it, in a world where job security often feels uncertain and where new technologies can seem intimidating, AI is no longer something to fear.
Instead, it’s opening doors, creating opportunities, and shaping a future where skilled individuals can truly thrive.
