Afrikaans vs Dutch: A couple take on phrases from their languages

We're confident that 'Driehoekie Doekie' is not the correct way we say 'bikini' in Afrikaans...

@joyceverwaaijen Or maybe it’s a “melk en koekie doekie” 🤭 #afrikaans #bikini #dutchvsafrikaans #saffa #language #couples ♬ origineel geluid - Joyceverwaayen ✨

Language has long been something that has divided people; it is a form of communication that has altered people's understanding of one another.

But as evolution took its course, we have seen civilisation break down languages and use body language and social media to connect. Pop culture has a strong influence on how we communicate, particularly the use of slang.

Afrikaans originated from the Dutch dialect. However, due to the influences of diverse groups in our unique country, the language has evolved into what most South Africans use today.

A Dutch woman and her beloved South African partner have attracted an engaged audience with their amusing videos on TikTok. The two share their version of saying English words in their first languages, which happen to be Afrikaans and Dutch.

As you might have seen in the video above, the boyfriend uses the slang version of how to say 'bikini' and shocks his Dutch sweetheart. It was just a joke...

Bikini is the same in Afrikaans as it is in English; it is also called Swemklere.

Mzansi reacted, of course - check out some of the comments below:

  • "I have done Afrikaans from grade 1 till grade 12 as second language, never heard of driehoekie doekie."
  • "It’s so funny to me, because Afrikaans has its roots in the Dutch language lol."
  • "From the part of South Africa I’m from we say swem klere."
  • "I love his humor 🤣 🤣 In Afrikaans we just call it a bikini."
  • "Never said that in my life, and Afrikaans is my first language."

Here's another video of the two of them sharing their versions of Peanut Butter - his version is way too literal.
