Taking out car insurance isn't as affordable as it once was, but it is a necessity. But what happens if you are involved in an accident and the person responsible leaves the accident scene?

Indeed, you would have to cross some red tape or hurdles to get your vehicle fixed.

The details are fuzzy, but a video shows a woman approaching her car with a note and some chocolates lying on the windscreen.

Watch what this driver did when they hit this woman's car. Can we say that no amount of chocolate will fix the car?

It was a nice gesture, but according to the law, the person who hit the car is legally responsible for the damage.

Here are some steps to follow if you are in an accident with another vehicle.

  • Always stop and assess the situation
  • Call the relevant emergency services
  • Do not leave the accident scene until the police arrive
  • If you have insurance, contact them
  • If the driver or owner of the vehicle is not there, you can leave a note with your contact information
  • Look for witnesses
  • Document the scene with photos
