Are we about to see the end of read receipts?

Are we about to see the end of read receipts?

This is definitely a preference we would like to be given...

When using social media, there are some unspoken rules that some follow and others totally are against.

One of them is about 'read receipts'. This can certainly cause a flair-up in relationships of any kind because it makes people feel ignored.

Read receipts tell tales that a person you sent a message to on Instagram has read your message. Then when they don't respond, it can turn into a world war of sorts.

Turning off your read receipts has not been an option for users on Instagram previously, however, there were ways around it all.

For instance, you could read messages whilst in airplane mode privately, but this only works if you don't tap on your message notification.

Given the controversy and potential warfare that comes from reading and not responding to a message, there have been some developments on Instagram with reference to the read receipts.

"Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on his broadcast channel on Instagram announced that the social media platform is testing a new privacy feature that would allow users to turn off read receipts for messaging. This feature would allow the receiver to hide the read status for a message from the sender." (Business Standard)

It seems this has been something that many users have requested, which has prompted the team to look into it. Essentially, if this is approved, users "choose when to let others see when they have read their messages".
