We cannot say that we do not expect there to be some sort of havoc on the roads this festive season.

The stats reveal that with the more than 500 deaths experienced on the roads since the beginning of December; the authorities are on high alert and are urging motorists to practice caution while travelling this festive season.

However, over and above speeding, driving under the influence, and general negligence, there are slippery roads and harsh weather conditions.

In a video shared on social media, a passerby captures the moments after an accident in which a white Volkswagen Polo overturned and landed on the side of the road.

We don't know where in Johannesburg this occurred, but luckily, no one seemed hurt.

Two people were trying to open the boot or trunk of the car to retrieve their belongings while the person who videoed the scene joked that they could not park there. We can understand how some people want to bring lightheartedness into things that happen during December, but there's a time and a place; don't be insensitive.

Social media users agreed with us that this was not appropriate behaviour. We don't kick people when they are down, and making a farce out of someone's stress is never okay.

Driving safely amidst harsh weather conditions or worse, other unruly motorists, is a daily challenge, but try and keep your cool these Summer holidays. Be mindful of other motorists, follow the rules of the road, and remember that it is never okay to drink and drive. Let's choose to do better and set greater examples for our kids.
