It’s no surprise that Volkswagen topped the list as the most searched car brand in South Africa on the used-car platform AutoTrader.
The VW fan base is strong in South Africa, as seen by the many VW vehicles on the roads. But with an impressive 81,053,923 searches in 2024, it's clear just how strong the demand really is.
This amounts to 2.6 searches every second throughout the year. If you're wondering what your guy might be doing on his phone, this could be a good indication.
Even more impressive? The top 10 most-searched brands make up less than 5% of all available market options, yet account for a whopping 66% of all searches.
AutoTrader CEO George Mienie explains that these searches are a true reflection of consumer interest, providing valuable insights into the popularity of different car brands and models.

While Volkswagen leads in car brand searches, the Toyota Hilux was the most searched car model in 2024, with an impressive 12,371,080 searches. The VW Polo came in second with 11,305,009, followed by the Ford Ranger in third place with 9,366,333 searches.
Interestingly, these top three most-searched models align with the top three cars most commonly hijacked in South Africa.
