Just as South Africans are gearing up to celebrate the December holidays, the monkeys in KZN are getting into the festive spirit, too.

Comedian Kevin Fraser, fresh off his South African tour, visited Durban and shared a hilarious encounter with one of the region's most mischievous residents – the vervet monkey

The video captured the cheeky antics of the monkey, proving once again that KZN's monkeys are just as playful and bold as the stories say!

In the video, Fraser recounts how a monkey "robbed" him – breaking into his home and making off with a bag of NikNaks.

What's truly hilarious is how unbothered the monkey was by Fraser's threats. But let's be honest, this kind of cheeky behaviour isn't unusual. The fact that the monkey chose NikNaks for its heist made it an all-too-typical South African experience.

The video amused people, and Fraser’s lighthearted mention of using Doom to deter the monkey stood out for many of them.

  • "The trust we have in Doom as South Africans needs to be studied."
  • "Wait till you buy garlic rolls, and they try them, don’t like them, then throw them at you."
  • "That was the most South African thing I've ever heard."
  • "Once I was at Sun City, and it took my phone."

Although they can be a nuisance to many households and outdoor get-togethers, you can do your part to live in harmony by following these tips from Margi Lilienfeld, Environmental Director at Simbithi Eco-Estate.

  • Despite what some people might think, feeding monkeys encourages unnatural behaviour. There is plenty of natural food available for them, so it's best to avoid feeding them.
  • Keep your home secure with screens and burglar guards to prevent monkeys from entering your property.
  • Avoid interacting with monkeys, especially younger ones, as this can cause them to lose their natural fear of humans.
