It takes just a second for kids to be placed in a dangerous situation.

The holidays bring lots of cheer and nostalgia but are also a peak time for things to go sideways.

We aren't talking about your family lunches when your uncle overindulges and causes mayhem or a kitchen mishap, but we're referring to the high crime rates during this time of year and the safety of our kids.

The busy shopping malls and public areas are high breeding grounds for kids to go missing, get hurt, drown or get kidnapped.

This is a reminder to always keep a watchful eye out on your children, whether you are out and about or at home. Kids tend to explore, and their curiosity can lead to many situations; sometimes, those situations can threaten their safety.

A video shared on Instagram reminded us that ensuring your kids have your full attention is vital. In the video, a father sits on the side of an escalator at a shopping centre.

The father is accompanied by his child, who looks around three or four years old. The father is busy speaking on the phone and doesn't notice that the toddler decides to climb onto the outside part of the moving escalator and is being lifted to the top.

By the time the father notices that the child is in danger and is frazzled about what to do, a stranger runs past him and positions himself under the top of the escalator, preparing to catch the child.

Luckily, the stranger manages to catch the child just in time, and the father, who had run up the escalator, runs down to see his kid.
