Do men ever really reach emotional maturity?
Updated | By Jacaranda FM/Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
Men are often stereotyped as immature, regardless of their age, but it's important not to paint all of them with the same brush.
Consider this perspective if you've ever been told you’re immature and are questioning how age relates to maturity.
A study conducted in the United Kingdom found that men typically reach emotional maturity at 43, while women peak at 32. Although this may raise some eyebrows, there's more to the story.
The study isn't a scientific evaluation of maturity, as maturity is influenced by social norms. Instead, it used surveys to explore how men and women define maturity, how they perceive their own maturity, and when they believe the opposite sex reaches maturity.
Maturity is also reflected in various behavioural traits, such as acting responsibly, caring for oneself and others, and demonstrating social and self-awareness.
While the study provided an average age for when men and women reach peak maturity, based on their own perceptions, it doesn't offer a one-size-fits-all answer.
The survey highlighted traits that people associate with immaturity, such as "laughing at gaseous emissions, showing off, relying too much on their mothers, and eating fast food in the early morning".
We can all admit these traits may sound familiar, especially among groups of men. However, as we've pointed out, emotional maturity and general maturity are influenced by a range of factors.
Mental health professionals agree that maturity isn’t determined by age alone. They believe a person’s background, values, and even biology play significant roles in their development.
Factors like pain, trauma and feelings of unfulfillment can play a role in emotional maturity in men. However, these are issues that can be worked through, either independently or with the support of a therapist.
While maturity is crucial for building healthy relationships, defining it by age alone is not an accurate or fair way to determine maturity in either men or women.
Maturity goes beyond being a simple checklist or a stage you reach as an adult. It involves knowing and understanding yourself, as well as how to interact with others in the best way possible.
Emotional maturity isn't something typically taught in a classroom, but it is important for success in all types of relationships, whether familial or professional. Healthy relationships require self-awareness and self-control, allowing you to navigate daily or yearly interactions without being easily triggered, upset, or offended.
So, for those hoping that age would make finding a mature partner easier... we're afraid it's not that simple!
