Don't try this famous 'Dirty Dancing' move at home
Updated | By The Workzone with Alex Jay
The famous lift from the finale of the 1987 coming-of-age film Dirty Dancing is one that is beyond the powers of many a professional dancer, but that didn't stop this amateur couple from trying it out.
A couple that can dance well together is bound to be the envy of all their friends. Whether it's a simple two-step or a more complicated contemporary number, it's always best to be able to hold your own on the dancefloor. But it's also important to know your limits: we can't all be top contestants on Strictly Come Dancing.
This is what Pennsylvania native Kristina Dumont's sister and her partner did not account for when they attempted the famous Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray lift from the 1987 film Dirty Dancing.
Dumont and a few friends were out at J.D. McGillicuddy’s for a casual get-together to celebrate their friends' wedding. Her sister started playing the Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes duet "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" from the finale of Dirty Dancing and, taken by the spirit of the previous day's nuptials and perhaps by the enduring nostalgia of the iconic coming-of-age film, Dumont's sister enlisted her partner's help in attempting the unforgettable lift from the movie's final dance scene. Things did not go well.
The other Dumont gamely runs up to her partner and takes a leap. He catches her, but only barely: they both topple to the floor within seconds. On their way down, they crash into a door and disturb a gathering that was going on in the adjacent room.
Fortunately, the couple is not badly injured. They will write this up as a good-natured, unsuccessful attempt at recreating the Dirty Dancing moment.
Dumont's sister says this is not the first time the couple has attempted the advanced move: "Every time this song is played she 'attempts' the lift. Usually ending in a fall so I always am ready to videotape it. [sic]"
They were lucky not to be hurt this time, but perhaps they should take it as a sign: never try to recreate Dirty Dancing scenes at home - it's for your own good.
