Employers say no sick leave for busy holiday period

Working in the retail and service industries has its pros, but you can forget about taking leave during the festive holidays...

It's common for businesses in the service or retail industry to be busy during the festive season. This is also the time of year when business owners demand more from their staff.

They may even go as far as to stipulate that their employees not take leave during busy periods for obvious reasons. But that's not including sick leave because, technically, no one plans to take sick leave.

A post on Reddit that has received much attention shared how a company put up a notice for their employees.

The notice read: "From November 25th until December 31st, there is a blackout on vacation days, time off, and there will be no exceptions for calling off, taking sick days, given that these are our busiest days of the year, we will need all hands on deck. Thank you." (Reddit)

There's always a more sensitive way of approaching things such as this, especially during a time of year when many people look forward to spending time with their families.

The notice didn't just sound cold and uncaring; it was harsh. No sound person would willingly get sick or know when they will get sick before it happens. So, for the company to forbid this is unreasonable.

Why does corporate think this is ok?

Many people shared their feelings on social media saying that many employers want their employees to work during the festive season but take leave themselves.

It's a dog-eat-dog world out there, no rest for the wicked...
