Homeowners prompted to protect homes this long weekend
It may be a time for family and friends, but don't forget that crime tends to rise during the holidays, so be aware.
As much as there is merriment in the air due to the school holidays and the upcoming Easter weekend, we cannot take anything for granted.
Crime is always rife in our communities and it is important to stay aware during these peak times.
Sadly, this is a reality that we cannot escape. Instead, it is important for us to be prepared and ensure that we have taken measures to keep our families and our homes safe during the holidays.
Many families tend to travel during the long weekend and therefore it is important to safeguard your home against prowling criminals.
Break-ins increase during the holidays, which is why staying alert and taking the necessary measures to make your home safer are things you should always do.
"According to the South African Police Service (SAPS)’s latest crime statistics, the country recorded 40,751 cases of home burglaries between October and December 2023. This works out to roughly 453 incidents a day. Meanwhile, the SAPS recorded 6,360 house robberies over the same period – or 71 every day." (Business Tech)
Here are some tips that you can follow to safeguard your home this Easter holiday:
- Test your alarm before embarking on your getaway and make sure all is in order with your system and batteries.
- Inform your security company that you will be away and share the contact details of a house-sitter or neighbour/family member who lives close by.
- Make sure everything is locked, all gates and valuables.
- Arm your alarm system, beams and electric fencing and activate your cameras if you have cameras.
- Make sure to switch off your geyser, unplug any devices and be pro-fire-safe.
- Use light timers to make sure your home is well-lit in your absence.
