As South Africans, we're renowned for our ability to find the silver lining, no matter the circumstances.

Our country is full of unique and surprising moments that we celebrate, always cheering for those who embrace who they are.

Yet, alongside these inspiring stories, we also face the harsh reality of poverty, with many people struggling to rise above difficult circumstances – not for lack of effort, but due to the challenges they face.

A recent UNICEF report highlights a sobering reality: South Africa is one of 20 countries responsible for 65% of the world’s children living in severe food poverty. Shockingly, 23% of South Africa’s children fall into this category, at risk of life-threatening malnutrition and related health complications.

While those statistics provide some perspective, they don't tell the whole story.

When we see South Africans experiencing poverty, yet still finding creative ways to make ends meet, we can't help but admire their resilience.

A recent video captured a moment that reminded us of the lengths people go to with the resources they have. What some may see as a nuisance – traffic light entertainers – are simply doing what they know to survive. It might seem manipulative, and many motorists may ignore their attempts to make money, but we should try to look at it from a different angle.

In this TikTok video, a man is not begging; instead, he offers a joke to the motorists stuck at the traffic light.
