It's not often that we find stories about squid ink. We're used to seeing videos of shark attacks but we rarely come across squid attacks.

We've seen the effects of it on TV, the Penguins of Madagascar gave us a look into the inner workings of henchmen squid.

What we do know is that squid use their ink as a defence mechanism in the same way a skunk uses its smelly spray. Be warned though, don't be a 'Skipper' and threaten a squid...

A video that has gone viral on social media reminds us why we don't mess with squid ink.

In the video that was shared on X, we see a man on a boat rubbing a black liquid onto his hands and arms as if he were applying lotion.

The narrator reveals that this man is rubbing a bag of squid ink onto his hands and arms. A decision he quickly realises wasn't the best.

According to Healthline, "Squids, when defending themselves against predators, release a dark ink. It’s popular to include in Mediterranean and Japanese cuisine and may even boost immunity or have antioxidant properties."

Watch what happens five days after this man applied the squid ink. In case you were wondering, the reason the squid ink stained the man's hands and arms is that its main compound is melanin.

"The main compound in squid ink is melanin, which is the pigment responsible for the ink’s dark color. It also occurs in humans and determines your skin color." (Healthline)
