South Africans are known for their ability to lighten even the darkest situations, pun intended. But we’re also celebrated for our resourcefulness and innovative problem-solving.

No bakkie to transport building materials? No problem – grab a taxi

No wheels on your car but need a tow? No worries – use some castors.

We are resourceful and entertaining all wrapped in one, and we're proud of it.

Recently, a man shared his solution to starting his car without the key. This isn't a demonstration of a fancy keyless starter, but rather a glimpse into a more common problem than you might think.

Have you ever had your car key break while still in the ignition? That’s likely what happened here, as the video shows a man using a bottle opener to start his car.

With over 1.8 million views, the video captures him using the small gap at the top of the bottle opener to get a secure grip. Then, he turns the key to start the car.

Most car owners don’t realise how much their keys are worth until they lose one. According to Bidvest Insurance the average cost of a replacement key starts at around R2,000, with luxury car keys reaching up to R10,000. For exotic cars, the price can be even higher.

For anyone without that kind of cash readily available, this bottle opener method offers a clever workaround.

Thankfully, in this case, the driver was able to improvise. But if the key had broken off inside the keyhole, this method might not have worked.
