"This morning I went shopping and I got robbed!"
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
Johannesburg resident Liyah Chetty recounts how she was robbed while shopping in Rosebank.
Scrolling through social media is always something people do to lift their spirits, but once in a while, you come across a public service announcement. It wasn't a happy story but aimed to bring attention to crime in South Africa.
A young woman was left feeling 'defeated' after she was robbed while shopping in Rosebank, Johannesburg.
Liyah Chetty shared a video last week explaining in detail what happened to her while she went out to do some shopping. She doesn't say exactly where she was robbed, but she mentions Rosebank and explains that it happened in a shopping centre parking lot.
Liyah explained that she left her groceries in her car after shopping, and then, on her way back from taking the trolley to the trolley bay, a man approached her.
He patted her down and took her bank card and she described how she froze, how she felt violated. Yes, she admits that things could've been worse, and she is so grateful nothing more happened, but it was still so invasive.
She explained that after the theft, she felt angry and weak. She questioned why she acted the way she did, saying that she usually has a 'big mouth' and always assumed she would behave differently if ever someone tried to rob her.
