Mzansi confused over cake slice at PnP store
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
Was that the leftover Father's Day cake that didn't get sold?
We can flag more than a few things as "South African", from using a taxi to load sand to travelling with lions on your bakkie.
So, it doesn't surprise us that one of our popular retailers would not allow anything to go to waste. Our world demands that we practice a no-waste philosophy, focusing predominantly on food waste.
Food waste is a huge contributor to climate change and if our bigger corporations can lower food wastage, it is better for the environment.
We assume that was what this Pick n Pay store in Grahamstown, now called Makhanda, was trying to do when it packaged a piece of a celebration cake for sale.
King Jenner, a TikTok user, shared a video of a piece of cake marked at R24,99. The cake was part of a personalised message, except now the only letters you can see are 'Hap' and 'Day'.
We can respect their effort in not letting this piece of the cake go to waste and repurposing it to make a sale, but there are some things that should be repurposed in a different way. For instance, if it were us, we would have given it to customers as a freebie, which would encourage them to buy something else.
People were hilarious in the comments.
- "How to say happy birthday to your ex"
- "Birthday on a budget!"
- "South Africa is so unique"
- "If your birthday is before payday"
- "When you want to buy a cake in this economy"
