As the long weekend approaches, here's a reminder for all motorists to stay safe on the roads.

Arrive Alive issued a statement today, alerting drivers to expect heavy traffic on the N3 starting midday, due to the Freedom Day long weekend.

A key message that always rings true for road safety is the importance of buckling up.

"Always allow for unforeseen circumstances when planning your road trip. Passengers can support drivers by being an extra pair of eyes, helping to monitor their surroundings, and anticipate dangerous situations,” says Thania Dhoogra, chief operating officer of N3TC, the company managing the 415km N3 Toll Route between Cedara in KwaZulu-Natal and Heidelberg in Gauteng.

For real-time updates on road and traffic conditions along the N3, road users can follow @n3route on X or contact the 24-hour N3 Helpline at 0800 63 43 57.

On that note, we came across something that reimagines the humble seatbelt buckle in a way we hadn't seen before.

Seatbelt buckles are traditionally used in vehicles and baby car seats to ensure safety, but a recent social media video showed how they can be used for protection of a different kind.

The video shows a person using a seatbelt buckle as a locking mechanism for a gate. As some might say, "Only in South Africa" can we see things from a varied perspective and push the boundaries of the ordinary.

Watch the video from Instagram.

Naturally, people were impressed and shared their feedback:

  • "That’s pretty genius to be fair."

  • "Reduce, reuse, recycle!"

  • "Don’t lie. That is really cool."

  • "Talk about repurposing."

  • "It works and I love it!"

  • "Technologiyaaaa."
