Several people spotted the hippo over the last week or so, but every time Bossies Community Justice went out, they couldn't find anything. Their operations manager, Albert Gryvenstein, told News24 that the operation took three hours to complete. They received the call on Saturday night that the hippo was walking along the R40 and old KaNyamazane Road, Gryvenstein and his team then promptly responded with emergency response units and the Mpumalanga Wildlife Protection Services to catch the hippo.
"It took three darts to get him to fall asleep and he had to be lifted onto the truck by crane," Gryvenstein added.
Gryvenstein said that the hippo was taken to the MWPS and would be sold and re-released into the wild.
