A group of 72 pensioners from Umkomaas, located on the south coast of KZN, booked a three-day trip to the Drakensberg last December 2024.

Each person paid R1,950, which covered transport and accommodation.

Bad weather led to the trip being postponed to March 2025. But when 31 March arrived, they were told the trip was cancelled due to travel issues.

Disheartened to hear this, many feared they'd been scammed.

More than R100,000 was paid to a Durban travel agency.

The owner said they had no intention of scamming anyone, saying they'd worked with this group before and always delivered on their promises.

According to The Witness, "The owner, who asked not to be named, said that other travel agencies were making false claims on social media, calling them scammers."

After investigating, the community and several family members feared they had been scammed. They called the Drakensberg resort and the bus company, only to find no bookings had been made.

The agency owner assured them the money would be refunded, bringing relief to the Senior Citizens Club, which is led by Selvie Moodley.

This unfortunate experience serves as a good reminder to always do your research before paying for any holiday package.
