Scam alert: Scammers posing as authorities targeting women
Updated | By Jacaranda FM/Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
Scammers are impersonating the police and targeting females over the phone, telling them that they've found packages with their information that contain drugs.

Scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, making it harder for people to spot the red flags before it’s too late.
One particular scam doing the rounds involves a syndicate targeting women by impersonating Customs officials and members of the South African Police Services.
South African entertainer Jeremy du Plessis, known for his SA Hype Team videos, recently took to social media to warn his followers.
His concern is personal – his wife was almost caught out when a man called her, claiming to be an official from airport customs.
He shared a detailed account of what happened to his wife. She received a call from an unknown number, and the person on the line claimed to be from Customs.
They told her a package had been intercepted with her name and ID number on it – containing drugs. She was, according to the caller, in serious trouble with the law.
Du Plessis suspects that these scammers are illegally obtaining people's information from databases and using it to create highly convincing stories to extort money from unsuspecting victims.
He explained that even his wife – who’s usually very level-headed – was nearly drawn in by the caller’s official tone and believable story.
The man said he was transferring her to the Bloemfontein Police Station, where another scammer, pretending to be a police officer, interrogated her over the phone for nearly three hours.
It was only when the "police officer" instructed her to report to the Bloemfontein Police Station in person that she realised something was off.
When she told him she wasn’t in Bloemfontein, he asked her to pay R1,000 bail via EFT. That’s when the red flags finally started to show.
Du Plessis’s wife became suspicious and told the caller she needed to speak to her husband first.
