A singing seal? Grey seals learn to sing 'Star Wars' theme

New research has found that grey seals can copy human speech and songs - and we have the video to prove it!
Researchers from the University of St Andrews found three trained seals were able to copy speech, as well as notes from songs like the 'Star Wars' theme.

The research team was blown away after discovering that the seals copied the sounds played to them.
The three grey seals were monitored from birth. Zola, one of the seals, was particularly good at copying melodies that were played to her, copying up to ten notes of songs like the 'Star Wars' theme tune and 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star'.
Lead researcher Dr Amanda Stansbury told BBC that she was amazed at how well the seals copied the model sounds they played to them.
"Copies were not perfect but given that these are not typical seal sounds it is pretty impressive. Our study really demonstrates how flexible seal vocalisations are. Previous studies just provided anecdotal evidence for this," she added.
