Swiss man believes hip-hop music can change the taste of cheese
Updated | By The Workzone with Alex Jay
Beat Wampfler believes that sounds can influence the maturing process and ultimate taste of cheese. He hopes hip-hop music will produce a beautiful flavour in his latest batch.
Beat Wampfler is a veterinarian by day and a cheesemaker by night. He is particularly passionate about Switzerland's famous cheese, Emmenthal, and has dedicated himself to making the best tasting Emmenthal ever. To do this, he is relying not only on temperature and nutrients, but on one other unconventional element: music.
Just as some gardening enthusiasts believe music can create an optimal growth environment for their plants, Wampfler believes different kinds of music can help cheese mature better.

Wampfler's cheese experiment is being conducted at Berne University of the Arts, where rock, classical, and hip-hop music is being played in cellars to see if it will influence the characteristics of the cheese.
The experiment falls under the discipline of sonochemistry, which involves studying the effects of ultrasound on liquids.
In March 2019, a jury of cheese experts will test the musical cheese to see if Wampfler's theories were correct.
