Sydney mother gives birth to 'one whopper of a baby'
Baby Parker weighs 5,75 kilograms - and his mother gave birth to him without any pain relief medication!
Sydney's Nikki Bell gave birth to her son Parker James Bell at Blacktown Hospital after having elected to not have any epidural anaesthesia. This is a remarkable feat in itself as many women who have given birth will know that labour is a painful experience.
But Nikki's case is different for another reason: her baby weighs an incredible 5,75 kilogram!
Local news called Baby Parker, who is one of the biggest to be born at the Sydney hospital, a "whopper of a baby". Nikki herself, who has one other child, does not think the size of her baby makes her experience of childbirth any different to that of other mothers: "I'm sure all births hurt, whether it's 1.7kg or 5.7kg - they all hurt."
Indeed. And they all have bright futures, too, though Parker has an advantage with his size. His mother hopes that he will become a competitive soccer player.
The largest baby delivered naturally in South Africa is Cape Town's Chesner Abels, who weighed 7,3 kilograms. Records show that the largest baby ever born in our country was Sithandiwe Simane, who weighed in at 10,2 kilograms and was delivered by Caesarian section in 1982.
