Things that make sense to have in a South African home
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
We found some value in some of these items...
We need things as South Africans. Necessities other than water and sanitation are required in every household. These things help us function better in our lifestyles.
Since we have had to navigate load shedding and water outages, some things make our lives better, if not easier.
A young woman shared a video listing all the things that make sense to have in a South African home. Some are necessities, while some are more humorous.
In the video, she showed things like a water tank, a gas stove, safety gates, or burglar bars at the doors and windows, which were stock standard in most homes. But she also shared things that were more unnatural to us than sensible.
For instance, she shared how they have an elephant foot to hold umbrellas, a portrait of the Big Five, and ostrich eggs.

People were shocked to see some of the things the young woman showed, such as the elephant's foot. Like them, we hope it was not a real elephant foot...
- "Please say that is not a real elephant’s foot."
- "The elephant foot took me out."
- "Ostrich egg and elephant foot didn't resonate with me at all."
- "So everyone just has the big 5 somewhere on a wall in their house."
