Unique performance art has people confused
Updated | By Jacaranda FM/Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
What may seem unusual for one is called art for another...

Art is inherently subjective, meaning not everyone will appreciate every piece in the same way.
While some artworks are designed purely to add beauty to the world, others serve as powerful statements on societal norms and issues that artists seek to challenge. This adds to the complexity of understanding a piece of art.
Some might say that some artists go to the extreme with their messaging and addressing social issues, so much so that they challenge all parts of the natural world.
An art installation we came across on social media has left many puzzled but aims to evoke a sense of stillness that’s hard to find in today’s fast-paced, control-driven society.
We’re often so consumed by the need for power and control that we forget how to release our tension, which can lead to both physical and mental health challenges.
The art series, called 'Shrink', is by Belgian-born artist Lawrence Malstaf.
Malstaf’s ingenious shrink-wrapping devices, featured in his live performances of 'Shrink', allow participants to independently regulate their airflow, creating a unique and thought-provoking experience.

A contributor from The Guardian shared his personal experience of being shrinkwrapped 14 years ago.
"'Of course, the first thing you see is this spectacular image: man as meat,'" Malstaf said when I emerged, shaking slightly from the muscular effort. 'But over time, I want the viewer start to see other things – to see the humanity of it, the breathing, the gentleness, the beauty.'
"For him, it's a Zen-like experience, a way of slowing time, both for the participant and the viewer. 'It's hard to tell how much time passes inside.' He isn't wrong. It's a surprisingly meditative thing, to be packaged."
