Russian authorities deployed a team of specialists to sedate and remove hungry polar bears that have invaded the homes of the people living in the Belushya region.

The Guardian reports that the move came after officials in the region - that boasts a population of about 3,000 people - appealed for help. “There’s never been such a mass invasion of polar bears,” said Zhigansha Musin, the head of the local administration. “They have literally been chasing people.”

Shocking pictures have been shared on social media by residents, showing the polar bears entering buildings and homes.

More than 50 bears have invaded the area and have been confining many residents to their homes, forcing authorities to declare an emergency situation on Saturday.

According to News18.com the officials have warned that they would be forced to take up measures to cull the bear population if these attempts prove futile.
