It was shocking for students at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University in Hyderabad’s Sultanpur, India, to find something unsightly in their food recently.

One of the students captured a video showing what appeared to be a rat swimming in a large pot of chutney.

Coconut chutney, traditionally made in South India, is seen in a large pot as the students stand above it, watching the rodent bathe in the white liquid.

It is alleged that the rat fell into the pot when it was not covered, which posed a serious health and safety concern. People jumped into the comments section on X (Twitter) to share their concerns - courtesy of India Today.

“Hygiene of food in hostels is a major concern. Not that the taste is any good. If not to save some cost, nobody would like to have food in the hostel mess," one person said.

"This is how you play with human life. Hostels are supposed to be safe havens, where students can focus on their studies without worrying about such nightmarish scenarios. Food safety is non-negotiable, and it’s high time we all take it seriously. Stay safe, everyone!” another added.

"A 'lizard' was found in the breakfast served to students of a government school in Telangana's Medak, and 35 fell ill. Preliminary reports suggested that the reptile might have accidentally fallen into the food during preparation." (India Today)

This is a growing concern in parts of India, as this was not the only event where someone fell ill after food was contaminated.
