WATCH: When we are lost in translation in Mzansi... and things escalate
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
"Ag, dit maak nie saak nie"
Some twenty plus years after democracy and sometimes there is still a matter of being lost in translation in South Africa.
Partly because of our history, but also because we are just not as learned as we would like with our South African languages...
Which as you can assume can ruffle up some people's feathers...
That's what happened in this case. A woman witnessed this in a supermarket and shared her experience online.
She called it a shopping experience that was lost in translation.
The video was originally shared on TikTok and then shared on Reddit.
Basically, she recalls being in the ice-cream aisle and witnessing an old white lady asking the merchandiser (who is a black woman) for some help with the ice cream flavours.
The merchandiser was helpful and explained to her that the flavour she was looking for was soft and advised against it.
Then the older woman spoke in Afrikaans, saying: "Ag, dit maak nie saak nie."
Which roughly translates to: "It does not matter".
