The weird things people do to keep the thieves at bay
Updated | By Jacaranda FM/Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
It might seem odd, but maybe it was a clever tactic to deter criminals – or just an eerie way to startle unsuspecting passersby and animals.

At first, this video had us thinking about how easy it is to play "the snoopy neighbour". But things quickly took a turn when we realised what we were actually looking at.
A woman walking through her neighbourhood spotted what appeared to be someone peeking over a wall. While it’s not uncommon to see people looking over fences, this one felt a little off. Upon closer inspection, we were just as shocked as she was.
What seemed like a person peering over the wall was actually a mannequin. Straight out of a horror movie, the eerie sight had us wondering about the homeowner’s true intentions.
It seems the mannequin was strategically placed there for security purposes. Perhaps it's meant to scare off potential criminals or even deter animals that might mistake it for a person.
While high walls and electric fencing are common security features in South Africa, using a mannequin is certainly an unconventional choice.
But in South Africa, anything is possible, and this might just be the most entertaining crime deterrent we've seen. It could very well be the modern-day scarecrow we never knew we needed.
