Why you should watch out for drain covers...
Updated | By Jacaranda FM/Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
Falling through drain covers is as dangerous as it sounds.
Being the victim of an accident is never ideal, but sometimes it's unavoidable. That said, many accidents can be prevented – often by taking a moment to be cautious and not taking things for granted.
In Malaysia, street vendors were going about their day when the most uncanny accident occurred. One woman was standing at her stall while another, who appeared to be helping with food prep, was sitting on a stool.
The stool, along with all their belongings, was placed over a drain cover. As the woman leaned in to sit, the cover gave way, and she fell into the drain.
It was a bizarre and frightening accident, and unfortunately, there’s been no update on her condition since the fall.
The impact from the fall looked brutal, and with no sound in the video, it’s unclear whether she was left unconscious or not.

It is usual for people to take things for granted, so choosing to gather around a manhole or drain cover is definitely not a good idea. These areas are prone to wear and tear, making them unsafe.
Whenever possible, avoid standing or sitting on manholes or drains. It's also important to educate your kids about the safety risks of playing near or on them.
