When did dressing up become so complicated?

High fashion and couture are known for their eccentricity, but let's face it: not everyone is on board with every design, and that's perfectly normal – no two people are alike.

However, Balenciaga takes things to a whole new level. The brand's designers are notorious for pushing boundaries and embracing non-conformity. If you're a fashion follower, you’ve probably heard of their ‘chips’ clutch and the controversial 'Zero' shoe.

Last year, the Shoe Clutch Knife was unveiled, sparking excitement among fashionistas eager to style it – and leaving the rest of us scratching our heads in confusion.

We thought fashion was shifting toward practicality, but it seems to be moving at a pace we can’t quite keep up with. The Shoe Clutch Knife, priced at $1,890 (R35,470.80), offers barely enough space for your house keys – and that's only if they happen to be a small bunch.

As the name suggests, the Shoe Clutch Knife is shaped like a high-heeled shoe, with a zip where a foot would normally go.

Designer Dorian Who shared a look on her Instagram account that left us questioning New York street style. After watching, we honestly wondered if we were being punked. Were we?

Tara Gonzalez, senior fashion editor at Harper's Bazaar, summed it up perfectly when she said the shoe clutch changed her "perception of pumps forever."

"The brand made a perfectly imperfect heel that forever changed my perception of pumps. A singular size 42 knife heel with a silver zipper zigzagging down the front. A heel that isn’t a heel at all – because it’s actually a clutch," she wrote.

Fashion used to be about style in one particular way, but perspectives are shifting. More and more designers are pushing boundaries and challenging the status quo with fresh, bold ideas.

So, the real question is: would you fork out nearly R36,000 for a clutch that looks like a shoe and can barely hold more than one item?
