Conservation officials are now looking for the animal, which is believed to be roaming near the Jukskei River. The department has cautioned residents of the area to be on the lookout for and steer clear of the hippo.
While hippos are mainly herbivores, they have been known to become aggressive, especially when threatened.
Officials are calling on people not to approach the hippo if they do come across it and to rather report its location. The department has also urged the public to not feed the hippo, in an attempt to discourage him from staying in the area.
