3 things to do for National Cleaning Week
Updated | By The Workzone with Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp/Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
We’re sure you’ll agree – clean spaces have a positive impact on everyone around them.

It's National Cleaning Week, and what better time to remind ourselves of the importance of tackling cleaning tasks without procrastination?
We've previously discussed the many benefits of cleaning, from reducing stress and anxiety – keeping our spaces tidy really can do wonders for our well-being.
National Cleaning Week was created by the International Sanitary Supply Association (ISSA) to honour those in the cleaning industry.
According to Days of the Year, "ISSA believes that maintaining clean spaces positively impacts public health, the natural environment and even the economy, so founding National Cleaning Week was an expression of this. Whether celebrated by cleaning professionals, companies or individuals, this event is an excellent reminder to take stock of what is important and work to create a clean and sparkly world."

Here are three great ideas for celebrating the act of cleaning:
1. Tidy up your space
It’s easy to blame a busy schedule for neglecting cleaning, but just like anything else in life, finding balance can bring countless benefits.
Use this week as the perfect excuse to start cleaning up your spaces. If you need a little inspiration, social media cleaning videos can be a great way to get motivated.
Begin with a small task – like organising your desk or tidying your dresser – and enjoy the sense of accomplishment that will drive you to tackle larger cleaning projects.
2. Hire help
For some, cleaning can feel like a chore they just can’t face, and time is often the biggest barrier. The best solution? Hire help. Whether you bring in a cleaner or hire a professional cleaning service, it’s a great way to take the load off.
When hiring help, be sure to follow fair compensation guidelines. Unfortunately, underpaying domestic workers is all too common in South Africa, and it’s something that needs to change.
Also make sure you hire someone trustworthy. This is easier if you’re going through a reputable cleaning company, as they usually vet their staff.
3. Extend a hand in cleaning
Often, people are more willing to help others clean than tackle their own space. Use this week as an opportunity to help a friend with young children, an elderly neighbour, or a family member who could use a hand.
There’s a special feeling that comes from performing a random act of kindness – it can be incredibly rewarding.
Additionally, take this time to establish a cleaning schedule for yourself and your family. Holding each other accountable for chores can turn cleaning into a fun, family activity that teaches your kids responsibility and brings you closer together.
