Kids are like sponges, they pick up everything around them.

It's true: kids are constantly learning and absorbing from their surroundings, even when we don't realise it.

This is a reality that not all parents are eager to acknowledge, mainly because it means you'd have to closely monitor your child's every interaction with the world around them.

We've seen several research projects and initiatives that highlight the consequences of unlimited screen time, and how even the most seemingly innocent content can have harmful side effects.

In 2024, a Forbes article offered some interesting insight on the topic, stating: "While many parents are rightly vigilant about avoiding kids shows with overtly inappropriate content – such as violence, sexual innuendos or explicit language – there are other subtle, malignant influences within children’s programming. These characteristics, often overlooked or underestimated, impact the developing minds of young viewers."

This has led to the realisation that not all kids' content is harmless. The effects can be quietly imprinted on a child's mind, often without any visible warning signs.

Or perhaps the signs are there, but we fail to notice them.

One concerned father shared a video of an innocent interaction with his young daughter in the car, only to be shocked by her unexpected chokehold.

In the footage, the toddler, standing next to her dad in the passenger seat, grabs his neck and pushes him down forcefully. He resists, visibly alarmed by her actions.

Siya Ndimande, the father, expressed his concern and wondered aloud what she might have been watching, raising the question about whether 'CoComelon' – a favourite among young children – could be influencing her behaviour.
