The date fruit: a Ramadan tradition turned nail inspiration
Updated | By The Workzone with Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp/Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
Dates are a staple for breaking fast during Ramadan, but their rich colour and unique texture have also sparked creativity beyond the kitchen – beauty bloggers are now taking inspiration from them for stylish nail designs.

If you ask a singleton about dates, they might lament the struggles of modern romance. But today, we’re talking about a different kind of date – the date palm fruit.
Once primarily a staple in Muslim households, dates have gained widespread popularity in the Western world for their natural sweetness and numerous health benefits.
While many Muslims enjoy dates throughout the year, they are a popular food choice for breaking fast during the holy month of Ramadan.
According to Muslim Aid, "The date was one of Prophet Muhammad’s favourite and most desired food items. Therefore, it is customary in many countries for Muslims to break their fast during Iftar by consuming dates."
Dates are beneficial during Ramadan because they're high in sugar and vitamins, such as potassium and magnesium, and an excellent source of fibre and carbohydrates.
The popularity of dates during Ramadan is driven by tradition, health benefits, and their distinctive taste, colour, and texture.
One video that caught our attention, shared by a digital content creator
with over 339,000 Instagram followers, shows how the unique qualities
of dates inspired a creative manicure.
Social media users were in awe of the "date-inspired" nails, impressed not just by the colour matching, but by the textured effect that mimicked the fruit’s surface.

During the holy month of Ramadan, it's fascinating to see how content creators are drawing inspiration from food and channelling it into their diverse passions.
This "date-inspired" manicure is just one example of how a date can spark creativity in the beauty industry.
Though, as one person jokingly pointed out, it might not be the best idea if you mistake your nails for an actual date.
