Dad shares how his daughter gets distracted during homework

There's something we must understand as parents – children need help when it comes to focusing and paying attention.
Parents who take the time to help their kids with homework really inspire us. By sitting down and working through their homework together, you show your children that you’re there to support them every step of the way.
One father recently shared his homework journey with his daughter, reminding us that while helping with homework isn't always easy, it's definitely necessary.
In their first homework session of 2025, things quickly got a little heated. Mthoh Khuzwayo insisted on using the day-month-year date format for the date, while his daughter was determined to follow her teacher's method.

Dad eventually realised that his daughter was set on doing things her way, and the sooner he accepted it, the better things went.
In another video, Khuzwayo showed just how tricky it can be to get her back on track once she spotted a 'Paw Patrol' picture on the back of her homework sheet.
We’re sure many parents can relate – keeping kids focused during homework time can be a real challenge!

Here are some helpful tips to make sure homework time is productive.
Speak with the teachers: Ensure you're on the same page as them and discuss what you need to do with your kids to help them achieve their school goals.
Set up a homework-friendly environment: Make sure the area where your child is doing their homework is well-lit, neat and tidy and equipped with the necessary stationery.
Schedule homework time: Identify when your child is most productive and use this time for homework.
Keep distractions at bay: Switch off the TV and limit music or phone calls. "Occasionally, though, a phone call to a classmate about an assignment can be helpful," says Kids Health.
Help them work independently: Remember that you're there as a guide and assistant not to do the work for them.
Motivate and monitor: Provide them with encouragement. If you notice they're struggling in certain areas, make a note and chat with their teachers on how you can help them.
Set a good example: Do your kids see you balancing your budget or reading a book? According to Kids Health, "Kids are more likely to follow their parents' examples than their advice."
