The new age of kids will tell you the truth whether you want to hear it or not.

There's something incredibly powerful about hearing your child their truth. On one hand, you feel proud that they're confident enough to put themselves first.

But, on the other hand, it an also bring you face-to-face with a reality you didn't expect – and one you might not have been fully prepared for.

Enter the CoComelon generation – kids who've grown up watching CoComelon and adopted an accent that's far from local. The "twang" they've picked up has left many parents and non-parents laughing out loud in the past, and it seems that hasn't changed.

A Xhosa mother shared a video on TikTok where she asked her daughter why she doesn't want to speak their mother tongue.

As a parent, it’s natural to encourage your child to embrace their roots, heritage, and language. This topic even gained attention in 2024 when Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga said that, starting this year, learners in Grade 4 would be taught in their mother tongue in South African schools.

In this case, the mother chose to share her daughter's response on social media, not only for entertainment but also to connect with other parents who might relate to her experience.

Xhosa is one of our 11 official languages and is a dialect that makes many speakers proud. However, it's also a language that's not for the fainthearted.

The reason this young girl doesn't want to speak her mother tongue, Xhosa, highlights the very uniqueness of the language itself – thanks to a moment shared on TikTok.
