'Dear Parents' teacher is back asking where are the children

Parents jokingly came for Mr Durand in his previous video, and in his true-to-nature demeanour, he slapped back…

The fun and games have ended for teachers who have bid their learners goodbye for the class of 2024.

They have packed their kids up, lock, stock and barrel, and happily sent them home for the holidays. But as usual, many parents have complained, asking teachers, including Teacher RiaanDurand, to keep their kids for the holidays.

Of course, it was all in the name of fun and laughter, but it primarily began with many parents complaining that their kids were overeating during the holidays and it was costing them an arm and a leg.

Mr Durand was happy to oblige (not really) but made a fair point in his response video where he asked parents where their kids were. After all, schools have not closed yet, but they are empty.

The official closing date for government schools in South Africa is 11 December 2024.

We haven’t even started December yet, and the kids have already taken the liberty of staying at home.

Of course, it is an unauthorised understanding between parents and teachers that after the school’s examinations, kids stay at home.

But we did enjoy Mr Durand’s sense of humour on this one. It seems he is enjoying his holiday before it officially begins, while the moms and dads feel the pressure.

Here are some handy tips that may assist you with keeping your kids entertained during the school holidays.

  • Plan activities based on your kids' interests and set a timetable. Liaise with them so that they feel a sense of control.
  • Holiday work—Set up a holiday job for the older kids, perhaps even making it something they could do at home, like cleaning the house, yard, or cooking.
  • Volunteering—Get them to volunteer, perhaps at the local library, community policing forum, community upliftment projects, etc. Volunteering is great as it teaches them responsibility and gives them purpose, and it also looks good on their school records when they decide to apply to study further or get an internship.
  • Sign them up for holiday classes or learn a new skill.
  • You can arrange playdates or meetups for the older kids.
