Five tips when shopping for back-to-school stationery

Here are some handy tips if you've left the stationery shopping for this week.
It's that time of the year again when we say goodbye to the festive season, and hello to back-to-school preparations.
As we pack up the Christmas decorations, it's time to dust off the kids' school shoes and see what supplies can be reused from last year. After all, Januworry is real – it's a month that demands careful planning, budgeting, and a focus on frugality.
For parents who didn't plan, don't worry. Here are some tips to make your back-to-school shopping easier.
1. Shop online
Many parents have found that buying their child's stationery from online stores is cheaper than heading to a physical store. Plus, you save time and avoid the hassle of crowded aisles with restless kids in tow.
Have a look at the online specials on the Checkers Sixty60 app, PnP ASAP, Woolies Dash, SPAR, Takealot, Dischem or Clicks, and use your rewards cards to activate discounts or use your points to save even more.
2. Check what you have
Before rushing to buy everything new, take a look at any leftover items from last year. You may have forgotten that you bought extra stuff during a sale, which can make all the difference.
3. Be budget-friendly
If you're on a tight budget, consider second-hand options. Many stores offer pre-loved uniforms that have been refurbished and are still in great condition. Leading with a savvy mindset can ease some of the back-to-school stress and help keep finances in check.
4. Labelling
A solid labelling system can save you from unnecessary frustration. How often do kids head to school on the first day with all their brand-new items, only to return and say their stuff went missing?
To avoid this, take the time to label everything: books, pens, pencil cases, calculators, socks, water bottles, and even bags.
5. Don't feel pressure to buy everything in one go
Stationery lists often detail the exact number of items needed for the school year, but you don’t have to buy it all in one go. Start by sending your child with what they need for the first term, then gradually buy the remaining items throughout the year. This will help you manage both your budget and the likelihood of misplaced items.
Also, while many lists may suggest specific brands, you don’t have to stick to the name brands; generic versions often work just as well.
