Free self-care techniques to boost your well-being

We're almost one month down and we're sure the fatigue is setting in... Take advantage of some of these helpful practices to boost your well-being.
As January draws to a close, 2025 is already in full swing, and life has returned to its usual pace.
By now, many of those well-intentioned resolutions – like practising more self-love, eating healthier, taking time away from social media, or exercising more – often start to fade into the background.
Self-care has become a must for those who are living life the "right" way (we say "right" in inverted commas because everyone has a unique way of living).
But the truth is, if you’ve committed to doing better, it’s up to you to follow through.
Consider this your reminder: prioritising self-care doesn't have to cost you money.
1. Take up journalling
Writing down your thoughts is a powerful way to acknowledge your feelings and work through them. It helps you release what no longer serves you. The best part? It doesn’t require anything elaborate – just set aside the time to write.

2. Make time to declutter
We recently shared an article about how to apply the ancient practice of Feng Shui to your home, and a key principle is decluttering. Experts often say that when you declutter the physical parts of your life, the mental parts reap the benefits.
So, why not tackle that part of your life that could use a clean-up? Donate or throw away items you no longer need – just make sure you're objective and practical when sorting through your stuff.
3. Go on a digital detox
You may not realise it, but South Africans often struggle with excessive screen time. Not only does this affect our mental well-being, but it can also take a toll on our family life.
Taking a break from screens can be a refreshing reset. Instead, focus on more active and engaging activities – go for a walk, do some yoga with your kids, cook a meal, or read a story together.
4. Get creative
Whether it’s crafting or DIY projects, working with your hands is not only relaxing but also great for relieving stress. Plus, you don’t need to spend money to get started, and you can involve the whole family.
Ask your neighbours for plant cuttings to start a garden, or use seeds from your fruit. Or repurpose old cardboard into something fun that the whole family can use, like a shelf or rewards chart.
5. Connect with animals and nature
A visit to a nature reserve or park can be such a wonderful experience. You can also head the SPCA and spread some love to animals in need. It’s a win-win because you get to spend time giving love to the animals and they get to melt your hearts.
