How much would it cost to travel by air or car this holiday?

If you are thinking of travelling from Johannesburg to sunny KZN this festive season, here's how much it may cost you.
Planning for your December holidays can be tricky, as can figuring out whether you are going on a road trip or flying, keeping it local, or travelling to another province.
Usually, spontaneous trips are the most fun, but they have some downsides, such as spending without a budget, which can be tricky when you're not flying solo. Things will likely add up when you don't plan, but we have some insight into travelling to Durban or Cape Town by car versus air travel.
"A return trip by car costs approximately R4,192 to Cape Town and R2,181 to Durban. In contrast, average round-trip flight prices for the same routes are significantly higher, at R6,913 and R4,169, respectively." (Business Tech)

The predicted fuel price reduction is the reason behind the significant difference in travel costs between air travel and driving. Plus, when you drive, you cater to a larger number of people (on average four), bearing one travel cost instead of single-priced tickets.
Driving is far more economical and comes with the added benefit of experiencing road trip perks, such as stopping at small towns, enjoying the scenery, spending quality time with the fam, and, of course, 'padkos'.
"A family travelling by car would need to spend an extraordinary amount—around R23,000 for Cape Town or R16,000 for Durban on overnight accommodation during the journey—to match the cost of plane tickets for four." (Business Tech)

"Below are the prices per airline for a round trip from Johannesburg to Cape Town and Durban for a 10-day Christmas holiday (20 Dec 2024 to 2 Jan 2025)*". (Business Tech)
You will notice that the prices are considerably higher; therefore, despite the convenience and ease of air travel, driving is the more affordable option.
