If you are looking for a family-friendly activity to do in Gauteng this festive season, we have some fun ideas for you. 

1. Christmas Village at Emperor's Palace

The enchanting Christmas Village hosts the Garden of Lights, Tom Bola's Fun Fair Alley, the Stone Town Stalls, the Tunnel of Lights, The North Pole, The Forrest of Fables, and Santa's Village. 

"The North Pole is where Santa calls home and prepares all year long to spread joy and hope. Explore this frozen wonderland complete with reindeer and our latest addition, the polar bear family. Look out for the penguins and get ready to meet Paul the Polar bear in person.

"Get sucked into a land of colour, light and fantasy in the Forrest of Fables. Keep your eyes peeled for fairies, gnomes and giant mushrooms between the forest trees which part to reveal giant story book and ethereal Fairy Queen waiting to grant your wish."

2. Festival of Lights at the Johannesburg Zoo

The Johannesburg Zoo has transformed into a magical wonderland with a stunning light display. There is live entertainment, treats for the family-themed festive period, and fun, family-friendly activities. 

"Joburg Theatre, in association with the City of Johannesburg entities, Joburg City Parks and Zoo, and City Power, are excited to present the annual Joburg Festival of Lights featuring an enchanting collection of illuminated life-size animal characters and classical, harmonious entertainment, food and craft night market for visitors to the Joburg Zoo." This event started on 28 November 2024 and will run until 05 January 2025. 

Ticket prices are R75 for kids 3 – 12, R100 for pensioners, and R175 for kids 12+ and adults. Kids under three years of age enter for free. 

3. Pines Resort Water Park

Described as the perfect place for creating unforgettable memories, this establishment has a new splash pad and sparkling swimming pool with various slides.

4. Montecasino Bird Gardens Family Day

"The bird and wildlife park is the perfect place for a memorable family outing in Johannesburg. Wander along enchanted garden walkways and marvel at the variety of colourful birds, mammals, reptiles and unusual animals worldwide. In our walk-through Aviary, you’ll find over 60 species of birds, including Scarlet Ibises and Nicobar pigeons, reptiles and small mammals, with smaller antelope wandering freely in the undergrowth."
