It's fair to say that when your child lies, your parenting sirens go off, and you feel disappointed. But that shouldn't be the case.

Kids are naturally programmed to lie and push the boundaries; it is a part of growing up and isn't (always) a reflection of your parenting. So, don't be so hard on yourself.

However, that doesn't negate the feeling of shock or fear that comes with acknowledging your child's fibbing. Sometimes, it could be an innocent lie (a white lie); other times, it could be worse, but either way, it doesn't have to feel like the end of the world.

Therapist Noelani Rodriguez found that "the reasons why kids lie are as complex and as nuanced as adults. Depending on where they are developmentally and how expressing emotions is demonstrated by the adults in their lives, kids can struggle with making sense of their feelings. Lying, then, can become a way to communicate fears, feelings, or emotional needs that aren’t being met." (Tribeca Therapy)

In a video shared on TikTok by a mother who was upset to find her son lying, we saw how children speak in the most convincing way, even as young as a toddler.

Mom videoed her son Ryder, who looked quite suspicious, asking whether he had eaten the chocolate from her room.

Ryder was adamant from the very beginning that he had not eaten the chocolate and responded by saying, "Not today." When his mother asked him what was in his mouth, he said, "It's banana on my mouth."

The little man was fighting a losing battle because the evidence was not in his favour. The smeared chocolate was still on his hands and his face, and he even had some chocolate on his pyjamas

Ryder's mom has a great sense of humour and posted another video of her son; this time, it was animated with Ryder having flashbacks about lying to his mother...
