Matric dances have become the crème de la crème of school events, with students pulling out all the stops to make the day unforgettable.

And not just for themselves – there’s a growing desire to stand out and be remembered by everyone attending. These days, being that student with the most creative entrance has become a badge of honour.

While many traditionally see their wedding day as the biggest, most extravagant event of their lives, today’s matriculants often view their matric dance as a major rite of passage – an official step into adulthood and society.

One matriculant who grabbed our attention took a bold – and unexpected – approach to his grand entrance.

Tavarin, a young man from Gauteng, shared his matric dance arrival on social media, showing up in a full convoy of vehicles while dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit.

His theme? A dramatic prisoner release.

The scene felt straight out of a '90s hip-hop music video, where the main character, fresh out of prison, steps into the spotlight for one unforgettable night. Think Cinderella, but with a hip-hop twist.

While Tavarin’s peers cheered and bowed in admiration of his bold entrance, not everyone on social media saw it as “epic”.

Love it or not, he thought outside the box, and that’s worth something.
