Plants that help keep flies and mosquitoes away

Here are some great options if you want to keep the flies and mosquitoes away naturally.
The New Year brings renewed energy and the desire to do more. Some focus on fitness or weight loss, others work on improving their financial well-being, and many strive to live more sustainably.
Living sustainably not only helps protect our planet but also encourages mindfulness in how we live our lives. People are increasingly choosing natural products that are gentler on both the environment and our bodies.
One common challenge we all face is dealing with pests, like flies, mosquitoes, and other insects. Instead of relying on harsh insecticides, why not take a more serene, eco-friendly approach by using plants to naturally repel these pests?
A local plant enthusiast with a nursery in KZN has shared some fantastic plant options that help keep flies and mosquitoes away.
1. Lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus)
This tropical beauty doesn't just smell divine with its fresh citrusy scent – it's also a fly's worst nightmare! Perfect for your patio, kitchen garden or even indoors.
2. Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus)
More than just a kitchen herb, rosemary's woody, aromatic scent doubles as a natural fly repellent. Bonus: it adds flavour to your meals and beauty to your garden.
3. Chives (Allium schoenoprasum)
These little green heroes might be small, but their mild onion-like aroma packs a punch for keeping flies away. Plus, they're delicious in salads.
4. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Known for its relaxing scent, lavender is also not a friend to flies. Planting it near your windows or doorways keeps your space fly-free and gives off a calming aroma.
5. Basil (Ocimum basilicum)
Basil is a natural fly repellent and emits a strong aroma containing compounds like eugenol, which flies avoid. This plant also has medicinal qualities.
6. Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis miller)
Aloe vera is known for its healing nature and is considered a low-maintenance plant. Its unique scent repels flies.
7. Mint
Mint is a great herb for salads, meals, and tea. Its fresh fragrance repels mosquitoes.
8. Thulasi (Holy basil)
This is a plant many cultures believe has healing properties and contains a powerful smell that naturally wards off mosquitoes.
9. Geranium
This flower doesn't just offer up brightly coloured blooms but its aroma is amazing at keeping mosquitoes at a distance.
10. Lemon thyme
A citrusy herb that deters mosquitoes away and is also great for culinary use.
